Acting as a true medieval watchtower, the town of Monpazier is unquestionably the best-preserved walled town in the Périgord region. This "new" town was built in 1285 using a grid street plan. The houses' lateral facades are separated by andrones, narrow interstices used as sewers and fire walls. In the centre of this characteristic fortified bastide, lies the delightful, square-shaped Place des Cornières, lined with covered galleries and which still boasts its old wooden covered marketplace.
