The Lascaux caves, the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistory", contain over 1 500 paintings from the Magdalenian period. Discovered in 1940, the caves were then closed to the public in 1963 because of damage to the walls. An incredibly realistic replica, Lascaux II, can now be visited in a setting that recreates the atmosphere of the original cave. The use of relief on the walls gives life to the wall paintings: huge black bulls (one 5.50m long), red cows, yellow horses etc. Admire also the strange "unicorn"!
