Useful information : When to go
When to go
In a region with one of the highest levels of rainfall recorded in France, summer is the season to go for: you should get lovely sunny spells against a shifting climate. Armed with an anorak, you can bank on lovely hikes taking in the mountains and the Atlantic. July and August offer a seemingly inexhaustible supply of events: the famous ferias of Bayonne, the tuna festival in St-Jean-de-Luz, the Junte de Roncal in La Pierre-St-Martin and almost daily pelota matches at the village frontons (pelota courts).
A trip between September and mid-October is also a good option, as it's still possible to bathe in the water, the swell is ideal for learning to surf, and, in the mountains, you will have the chance to see the grape harvest or the transhumance.
Lastly, in winter, you will get to experience the Pyrenees in the snow (Nordic skiing in Iraty) or the romanticism of seawater therapy in St-Jean-de-Luz.
