Blaye Citadel

This fortified site completed by Vauban in 1689 belongs to the Network of Vauban's Major Sites, designated a Unesco World Heritage site since 2008. Along with Fort Paté, on an islet in the Gironde, and Fort Médoc, on the left bank, it is part of a network of fortifications designed to repel English seaborne attack. In the citadel, don't miss the view of the estuary from the tower of the Fort de l'Éguillette or the Place d'Armes.
