Nicknamed the "Versailles of the Sea", this is the oldest French lighthouse still to be operated. The elegant white Renaissance-style tower is 67.5m tall, with seven storeys. Even if the facility was automated in 2006, it still requires the presence of two guards. A monumental doorway leads to a 311-step staircase up to the light. The first floor contains the "king's apartment", and the second floor houses the chapel, which has a fine dome.
