This quintessentially Southern city has an ambience of carefree goodwill. It's a pleasant place to live... and to stroll along the medieval streets bordered by half-timbered houses and through its shady squares and pedestrianised areas. But Agen is far from sleepy. Major works are ongoing to enhance the city's assets, framed as it is by the banks of the Garonne and the side canal used by bicycle-tourists, Santiago da Compostela pilgrims and hikers. The last weekend in August it celebrates its emblematic prune with a festival.
