Beautifully set against a mountain backdrop and positioned as its name implies at the foot of the port of Roncevaux, this town is the last halt in France of the St James' Pilgrimage Way. Its ramparts and citadel bear witness to a former turbulent military past, although nowadays the former capital of Basse-Navarre is a peaceful, yet pleasantly bustling town.
