On the banks of the Allier river, the peaceful Bourbonnais capital, annexed to the French crown in 1531, is surrounded by countryside and the Sologne. Tourist attractions include the pleasant Mariniers district and the magnificent triptych by Jean Rey, the Master of Moulins, a masterpiece of medieval art. The Centre National du Costume de Scène et de la Scénographie, with its unique collection of over 10,000 theatre costumes, has breathed new life into the "city of mills".
