When to go
Come in July and August, the best time of year for enjoying all that this appealing destination has to offer: walking, canyoning, canoeing or swimming in the lake, Lac de Garabit-Grandval. On another note, Aurillac International Street Theatre Festival, in August, is a highlight of the French artistic scene: book your accommodation in advance as it's a very popular event! In August, though, be prepared for potential storms and sudden variations in temperature (bring a jumper)!
May and June are prone to spring showers, but the risk is compensated for by the spectacle of the flowers blooming in the summer pastures and traditional local festivals (Fête de l'Estive in Allanche, Festival des Hautes-Terres in St-Flour and transhumances between Lot and Cantal).
Winter brings good snow cover from December to April for downhill or Nordic skiing. And you can unwind as you immerse yourself in the healing waters of Chaudes-Aigues Centre Thermoludique.
