Puy-de-Dôme is the kingdom of volcanoes. The Chaîne des Puys, with its rounded summits, some bare, some wooded, form the spine of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Park. The Puy de Dôme (1 465m), the highest peak, commands a magnificent view of the Monts Dore, which are dominated by the Massif du Sancy (1 885m), the highest point of the Massif Central, and the Massif du Cézallier. Follow up the excursion with an instructive visit to Vulcania, where you can find out all you ever wanted to know about how these volcanoes were formed. For a change of terrain, head to Clermont-Ferrand, which boasts a magnificent example of Auvergne Romanesque art in the form of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-du-Port, then take a break in the spa town of La Bourboule or stop off at St-Nectaire and taste the famous cheese!
