Gallo-Roman ruins, 11C-18C churches and fine historic residences (notably hôtel de Beaumont): such is the heritage of Valognes, which in the 18C was known as "Normandy's Versailles". Since then, the town's reputation has continued to prosper (it is now part of the French "Towns of Art and History" group of major cultural sites), helped by some sensitive restoration carried after war damage suffered in 1944.
