The oyster beds can be made out in the distance, long black rectangles against a blue background. You see them from the road to the Port de la Houle. Then you notice the flat-bottomed boats: Cancale is well and truly Brittany's oyster-farming capital. Indeed, it was already supplier to the court back in the time of François I. The "upper town" and "lower town" were built out of this industry. At the far west of Mont-St-Michel Bay, Cancale also has exhilarating landscapes, especially when the light softens.
