When to go
If for you Burgundy is synonymous with great wines, then you should visit the region in autumn. This season is reminiscent of an Indian summer, when the superb vineyards are ablaze with golden colour. Several wine-related events are organised, the climax being the famous and enduringly popular wine auction at the Hospices de Beaune at the end of November.
The winters are wet and harsh, providing ample opportunity to sit down with friends to a good meal and a bottle of wine.
But perhaps your interests lie outside the drink of the gods. In that case, bear in mind that spring is also a brightly coloured season, with fields full of rapeseed in flower. In a more subdued atmosphere, the canals, generally closed from mid-November to mid-March, open to boats again, and ramblers begin to fill the cycling paths and hiking trails. The scale of all these activities increases with the summer heat, and might even culminate in water-skiing on the Saône, the Loire or the Yonne.
