A bird's eye view of this 16C town would reveal it sitting within a ten-pointed star. Seen from the ground, Rocroi unfolds around a square encircled by fortifications. The site of a battle against the Spanish in 1643, it was fortified by Vauban in 1675. Renamed Roc Libre during the Revolution, it held out for a month against foreign troops in 1815. From Porte de France, a "tourist path" tours the fortifications, giving visitors an idea of the ramparts' complexity.
