Capital of Pascal Paoli's "Corsican nation" between 1755 and 1769, Corte played an important role in the island's history and is still considered the island's cultural capital by many Corsicans today. The old town is perfect for a stroll, with its steep narrow streets overlooked by the citadel. Situated at the crossroads of many valleys, this student town makes a perfect base for exploring the sights of inland Corsica, such as the Aiguilles de Popolasca, the Restonica valley and the lakes of Monte Rotondo.
