The first thing that will strike you - and charm you - in Franche-Comté is the diversity of the landscapes: forests as far as the eye can see, majestic lakes, myriad marshland areas, wild gorges, caverns and deep chasms, impetuous rivers, impressive waterfalls... To the north, the unspoilt beauty of the Ballons des Vosges, at the centre, the magnificent Saut du Doubs waterfall, to the south, the breathtaking panorama of the Crêt de Chalam, in the Haut-Jura Nature Park - and that is a mere snapshot of the countless natural treasures the region has to offer. Climb to the top of the Grand Colombier, from where the exceptional vantage points will give you a foretaste of what is in store for you here. Even the discreet capital, Besançon, affords spectacular panoramic views from the top of its ramparts. Next, head down to the banks of the Doubs to stroll along the canals of the lovely Dole. Take a break during your walk to sample one or two of the many local specialities: cheeses with character, such as Bleu de Gex, and choice salt meat, such as saucisse de Morteau.
