When to go
If you don't mind a bit of hustle and bustle, choose summer, the least rainy of the seasons, to travel about Haute-Normandie, and particularly its coast; remember, though, that even then the sea is cool. At this time of year, the region is a hive of activity: in late June, the festival Le Rock dans tous ses États takes Évreux by storm; in July, it's the turn of the Festival de la Marionnette en Pays Risle-Charentonne to delight young visitors.
Nature also puts on quite a show in late spring and early summer (more humid) when the gardens are carpeted with flowers. Don't miss the linen fields, which flower every morning for a week in mid-June, or the water lilies in Claude Monet's garden, in Giverny, which start to open up in July.
And for anyone who has a penchant for landscapes tinged with a melancholy charm and deserted beaches, choose late autumn, when the area is unfortunately quite rainy.
