The beach closest to Paris and framed by cliffs, Dieppe is the oldest seaside resort of France. Its port, where modern edifices rub shoulders with old fishermen's huts, is one of the most unusual of Normandy. Dieppe's was partly forged by its sailors who brought back ivory and spices from Black African trade counters from their voyages. Today the Pollet wharfs are still busy with the toing-and-froing of ferries across the English Channel.
