The two buildings, designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel (1698-1782), are in the Louis-XV style, combining severity and lightness, overall harmony and quality of details (Corinthian columns, pediment, elevation of the façades). To the right of rue Royale, the Hôtel de la Marine is overseen nowadays by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux; to the left are the Automobile Club de France and the internationally renowned Hôtel de Crillon, which reopened in 2017 after four years of refurbishments.
