The Petit Palais was built by Charles Girault for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. In 1902 it became the home of the city's fine arts museum. Faced with the task of ensuring that works displayed were only exposed to daylight, the architect multiplied its openings. The collection is as eclectic and impressive as its setting, focusing on French art from 1880 to 1914, including decorative arts in 1900, Courbet and realism, Roll and naturalism, Monet and landscape painting, and Cézanne and modernity.
