Not far from Fontainebleau forest, Barbizon was no more than an unpretentious little hamlet until the early 19C. But then the village swiftly became a favourite with landscape painters such as Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, founders of the famous Barbizon school. Today, Barbizon comprises a long main street which is lined with old studios converted into museums, art galleries, hotels and restaurants.
