Écouen
The Essential
Surrounded by a beautiful forest, this pleasant village was popular with artists in the 19C, giving rise to the School of Écouen. Several streets still bear the names of these artists (Schenck, Seignac, Frère etc). Fans of the decorative arts should make for the fabulous collections of the Musée National de la Renaissance, which is housed in the town's superb 16C castle. Saint-Acceul church, rebuilt in the16C, boasts some fine Renaissance stained-glass windows.
