Lices Basses

Between the gates Porte d'Aude and Porte Narbonnaise is the Inquisition Tower with its prison and chains (the sight of which alone is enough to make you confess to anything); further on, the square Bishop's Tower straddles the lices (the space running between the city's lines of fortifications), blocking all north-south communication. Carry on to the round Tower of Justice. Notice the difference between the original roofs to the south and these angular ones by Viollet-le-Duc.
