Sited on the banks of the River Orbieu, the town faces the majestic Ste Marie d'Orbieu Abbey, founded in the 8C and in recent years reinvigorated by the arrival of the order of the Canons Regular of the Mother of God (the local council of the Aude owns the oldest part of the buildings). This charming medieval town sports old bridges, the remains of ramparts and historic half-timbered houses such as the 14C maison Maynard. In summer, its cobblestone square in the city centre comes alive with markets and fairs selling crafts and local produce.
