This treasure trove of pale-stone buildings is tucked away in a remote valley at the confluent of the Verdus and the Hérault: St-Guilhem-le-Désert, a village clustered around an old abbey and nestled at the foot of impressive limestone cliffs. The legendary city, which bears the name of the founding patron saint, has retained its medieval identity with a rare authenticity. Along with the neighbouring Gorges de l'Hérault, this exceptional site obtained the prestigious title of "Grand Site de France" in 2010.
