When to go
With altitudes varying between 200m and 1 699m, Lozère experiences highly contrasting weather conditions. These variations can be felt in summer in particular: at altitude the risk of stifling heat is reduced, whereas in the gorges, Gorges du Tarn, for example, which have lots of visitors during this season, the temperature can easily rise because the area is sheltered from the wind. Summer is all the same the dream season for canoeing, indulging in wares from the market stalls of Florac or attending the Festival 48e de Rue in Mende.
In winter, the cold invades the region, covering the plateaux with snow and offering good conditions for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while a handful of resorts also have facilities for downhill skiing.
Spring and autumn are less pleasant seasons, as often subject to rain and storms, while the wind chills the atmosphere. Theme-based events held as part of the Cévennes National Park Nature Festival, from April to November, and the beauty of the landscapes are still good reason to come away here.
