On the border between the ancient territories of the Arverni and Lemovices, Bort developed in the Middle Ages. Charles VII granted the small town the right to build ramparts around itself, and a few vestiges of the walls remain. Bort is dominated by its famous volcanic organ columns. The reservoir of the dam is a popular spot for angling and water sports. Bort is an ideal location from which to explore the banks of the River Dordogne or the mysterious Artense area, dubbed "Auvergne's Scandinavia".
