Crypt of St Martial

Interesting
This crypt was discovered in 1956 by chance on a site where a parking lot was planned. Martial and his two companions were buried here in two large sarcophaguses. In the 9C, Martial was exhumed and placed in a golden reliquary. The bird mosaic (replica on display here) dates from this era. After you have crossed the room containing an enormous 4C granite sarcophagus, you will reach the foundations of the churches of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Benoît, established on the site of an early Christian cemetery.
