Built on opposite banks of the Meurthe River, Baccarat is famous throughout the world for its crystal works. In 1764 Louis XV authorised the creation of the St Anne glass works, which became a crystal works in 1817. Its wares were to become prominent features of the world's most prestigious tables of the 19C and it was the only manufacturer capable of creating pieces of enormous dimensions. The manufacture of this luxury material remains the town's main activity and a genuine spearhead of economic and tourist development.
