Calvados
The Essential
In Calvados, you have an appointment with history: the history recounted on the Bayeux Tapestry, which celebrates the era of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England, who built Caen Castle and Falaise Castle; and also the history evoked by the Caen Memorial and the region's beaches, that of the most formidable military landings of all time.
Calvados is also synonymous with the pleasures of the seaside, on the fine sandy beaches of the Côte de Nacre and in the elegant resorts of the Côte Fleurie, such as Honfleur, Deauville and Cabourg.
Further inland, the Pays d'Auge harbours fine half-timbered country houses, such as the Château de Crèvecoeur-en-Auge, an exceptional medieval ensemble. You may equally decide to follow the cider route and sample one of the region's specialities: the famous camembert!
