Bayeux Tapestry

Highly recommended
A graphic record of the Middle Ages, especially revealing of customs, costumes, boats and architecture, this textile gem of Romanesque art is housed in the Bayeux Tapestry Museum. It is made from coloured wools embroidered on a linen strip 68.30m by 0.50m and consists of nine panels finely stitched together. The tapestry is subtitled by long Latin inscriptions with Saxon spelling, and the upper and lower edges are embroidered with fantastical animals and motifs reprising the main scenes.
