La Romieu is located on the Way of St James, which, coming from Le Puy, goes through Moissac, then on to Condom (GR 65). This stopover - the word romieu was a name for pilgrims on the way to Rome - was also an ecclesiastical city surrounded by ditches and walls. The collegiate church, built by Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, chamberlain for the Avignon popes Clement V and John XII, is testament to this history. Its two towers, the octagonal tower and Tour du Cardinal d'Aux, survey the surrounding Gascon countryside.
