La Romieu stands on the Way of St James, which, coming from Le Puy, goes through Moissac, then on to Condom (GR 65). This halt -romieu referred to pilgrims on the Way to Rome - was also an ecclesiastical city surrounded by moats and walls. The collegiate church, built by Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, chamberlain of the Avignon popes Clement V and John XII, bears witness to this history. A viewing platform overlooks the belfry to the west, the Cardinal's tower, the cloisters and the square.
