La Romieu
The Essential
La Romieu is located on the Way of St. James which, coming from Le Puy, went through Moissac, then Flaran (GR 65). This stopover - the wordromieu was a name for pilgrims on the way to Compostella - was also an ecclesiastical city surrounded by ditches and walls. Bearing witness to this is itscollegiate church , built in the 14C by Cardinal Arnaud d'Aux, chamberlain for the Avignon popes Clement V and John XXII. Its two towers, theoctagonal tower andCardinal's tower dominate the surrounding Gascon countryside.
