When to go
Choose winter to warm up in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region! It may be cold here, but the season is festive and there are numerous opportunities to come together, for instance, St Nicholas Day, the Christmas markets at Lille or Arras, and, of course, the legendary carnivals and processions of giants in Dunkirk, Cassel or Bailleul.
There is no denying that the weather can be changeable, and opting for the summer means you are stacking the odds in your favour if you are keen to enjoy the beaches and water sports, especially on the Côte d'Opale. In this season, the large towns are almost deserted.
Lastly, spring, often pleasant in spite of the odd and sudden shower, is ideal for observing the flora and fauna, in particular the migratory birds of the coast.
