Known as the "Little Bruges of the North" thanks to its canal. It has a typically Flemish atmosphere, with its winding streets, huge squares and quiet quays. Badly damaged in 1940, it has been superbly rebuilt with yellow-ochre brick buildings, chapels and red tiles, which lend it a simple, unified appearance. Since the success of the film Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the Sticks), the number of visitors to Bergues has risen dramatically.
