Since 1982 the museum has been housed in the 18C former palace of the archbishops of Cambrai, surrounded by a splendid park. It was entirely refurbished in the early 2000s by Laurent and Emmanuelle Beaudoin, and a brick and glass building added. Some 170 works bequeathed by the Matisse family or on loan from the State, can now be displayed to greater advantage. The Cabinet des Dessins, the finest collection of the artist's drawings, is a must. Also recommended are the Tériade (art publisher) collection and Henri Cartier-Bresson's photographs.
