Citadelle de Lille
Having taken Lille, Louis XIV, quickly built a citadel. Vauban handled the plans. 2 000 men were given shovels and pickaxes. It is made up of five semi-circular strongholds. The Royal Gate leads to the "weapons' square", which is surrounded by the buildings in sandstone, brick and stone constructed by Simon Volland, in the classic Lille style. The Monument aux Fusillés by Felix Desruelles, commemorates the Lille patriots executed here in 1915.
