Situated at the crossroads of three regions (Normandy, Brittany and the Loire), the capital of the Mayenne département stands on the river of the same name. The town's Musée d'Art Naïf in the old château is home to works by Henri Rousseau, famous for his jungle scenes, while the town is also the birthplace of the yachtsman Alain Gerbault. Charming half-timbered houses lead down to the River Mayenne, where boat trips are available.
