Pork rillettes, insurance and motor racing are often associated with Le Mans, but that would be an incomplete picture. The red city (due to its red walls) boasts a rich heritage within its Gallo-Roman ramparts: a fine Gothic cathedral and a warren of narrow cobbled streets lined by half-timbered houses. The historic town is known as Cité Plantagenêt, a reference to the dynasty which originated in these parts and long controlled the county of Maine.
