The Breton-Vendée Marais

The marshland of the Marais Breton-Vendéen has dried out a little over the centuries, initially thanks to the work of monks and then (in the 17C) Dutch engineers. The saline marshes around Bourgneuf and Beauvoir gradually became farmland grazed by Vendée horses, cattle and sheep. The area is known for its traditional Maraîchins culture, best explored by visiting Le Daviaud Ecomuseum in Barre-de-Monts.
