Perched on a rock 100m up, presided over by its cathedral's towers, Laon is fittingly nicknamed "Crowned Mountain" (Montagne Couronnée). The medieval town has many surprises in store, underground passages and charming, bustling streets. A famous cathedral, interesting monuments, many old houses that stretch out along narrow streets, medieval ramparts facing a vast horizon, all make the former capital of the Carolingian empire an absolute must to visit.
