The first impression as a visitor to Compiègne is of a large town on the edge of a forest with a palace giving onto vast swaths of wooded land. It was once a royal residence, before bearing witness to the lavish receptions of the Second Empire. Some will want to delve into the past with a tour of the château; nature lovers and history buffs can enjoy one of the numerous walks in the forest where the 1918 and 1940 armistices were signed. The old town centre has museums with varied collections in its charming shopping streets.
