Compiègne Palace

Highly recommended
The château, a vast triangle covering more than 2ha, looks harshly classical. But the interior decoration, the collection of tapestries and the furnishings (18C, First Empire and Second Empire) are well worth seeing: the numerous and splendid historical apartments present remarkable works and mementoes. Note the trompes l'oeil by Sauvage above the doors. The Imperial Theatre, on which work began under Napoleon III, was only actually inaugurated in 1991!
