When to go
Along the coast, summer is invariably hot and sunny. Perfect for sunbathing, swimming… and catching a music festival: in July Les Francofolies de La Rochelle comes to town. With the arrival of the fine weather, the villages come alive with numerous festivals. In the seaside resorts, regattas and festivals celebrating the sea and sardinades take centre-stage. All the tourist sites fling open their doors, including Fort Boyard, which can only be visited in July and August. The only drawback of this season is that everywhere is packed, not least the campsites.
On the other hand, during low season, the beaches are once more peaceful. During the spring tides of March and September, sometimes synonymous with rain and wind, vast expanses of beach allow for long sessions of fishing from the shore. It's the ideal time to explore the islands or the Marais Poitevin (starting out from Marans), and observe the migratory birds.
In winter, why not book into one of the numerous seawater therapy centres for a treatment?
