This charming town with its peaceful and narrow cobbled streets has probably not changed much since the golden era of Louis XIV. Its fortifications are early 17C but were extensively modified by Vauban. The harbour extends into the former sailors' district, now lined with shops, creating something of an islet in the heart of the port. Head to the upper part to get back to peace and quiet, and to see the 17C half-timbered houses around Place Anatole France or 16C Place Vinatière.
