Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde

Recommended
Built by Henri Espérandieu in the mid-19C at the city's highest point (154m), the Romanesque-Byzantine basilica affords unrivalled views over the whole of Marseille. Note the many ex-votos placed here by sailors. On top of the 60m bell tower is the famous gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, "The Good Mother". On the ground floor of the sanctuary there is a small museum that looks back over the history of the place, covering the cult of the Virgin Mary, pilgrimages, processions and the lift that went up to the sanctuary until 1967.
