When to go
You might well fall in love with Marseille in autumn, when the beaches empty out but it's still warm enough for a dip in the sea and for the aperitif on a café terrace, heated by the last rays of sunshine. The calanques can be visited freely and the Fiesta des Suds, in October, shines a light on all the diversity of the city. However, the showers at this time of year can be torrential.
Spring offers the same advantages, although it has the drawback of drops in temperature on the days the mistral blows.
In summer, the sun and the heat draw crowds to the beaches, while the city hosts numerous events: the Mondial de Pétanque tournament, Marseille Jazz (Festival des Cinq Continents), the Festival de Marseille, dedicated to dance and the arts, and the international documentary film festival.
In winter, the sun still shines, and the mild temperatures are a pleasant accompaniment to the Christmas market and foire aux santons, then the Candlemas procession in February.
