Long known as the Nice of the Alps on account of its sunny weather, all it lacked was water, which came with the construction of the huge reservoir of Lake Serre-Ponçon. Perched on an outcrop 80m/262ft high, the fine cathedral, formerly the guardian of the Durance River and its intrepid log rafters, is a landmark for sports, kayak and sailing enthusiasts, as well as Orres and Crévoux skiers.
