The Essential
In the heart of Queyras, at an altitude of 2,042m, St-Véran is both one of the most beautiful villages of France and its highest inhabited commune. Built entirely of wood and stone, its authentic chalets sport huge storage lofts and long galleries (fustes), where cereal crops continued to ripen after the harvest. Each of its six districts is isolated from the other to avoid the risk of fire. The last village in the valley, it is the departure point for some magnificent walks.
