La Seyne-sur-Mer

La Seyne-sur-Mer
The Essential
La Seyne was a major shipyard in the 19C, and has since been transformed into a marina with mussel beds and schooners at anchor. Although apparently unassuming, the place is actually of great historical significance. It was here that in 1793, Bonaparte earned his general's stripes by chasing out the English who were entrenched in Balaguier fort... Today this same fort houses a Marine Museum that brings to life the dark history of the penal colony of Toulon (that of Jean Valjean).
