Avignon
The Essential
Highly recommended
Avignon has two sides. During its prestigious festival every July, the "Cité des Papes" turns into an enormous theatre and comes to life with a packed programme of shows that draw the crowds. As soon as the festival shuts its doors, the city eases back into a sort of indolence, ready to be explored: palaces, gardens, ramparts, bell towers... An outstanding wealth of architecture that earned Avignon's Palais des Papes and Pont St Bénézet recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995.
